Finding the right practitioners to help you address your mental health symptoms can be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make!
This choice can literally mean the difference between floundering endlessly or making progress, so you can get back to life….
But where do you start?
After 25 years in the mental health world as a client, therapist and functional nutrition practitioner, I can tell you that most people with ongoing mental health symptoms that have not responded to therapy and medication have no idea where to begin….
I know this because when I started on my journey of healing my own depression and anxiety, I found a therapist and psychiatrist in the phone book.
Opened the phone book and chose randomly. No referral, just a name and a number.
And, not surprisingly, it didn’t turn out all that well….
In fact, it took 5 or 6 more therapists before I found my trusted “guide”…the one who helped me discover what steps I needed to take to move forward.
My journey was a bit haphazard. And took a long time.
I would find something that helped somewhat and then I’d wander for a long while until I found the next helpful tool. It took so many years to put it all together.
I think this is a pretty common path for people with mental health struggles, especially if you are more holistically inclined.
I believe this is true for 2 reasons:
1) Mainstream mental health sees therapy and medication as the ONLY real way to address depression. So most doctors and therapists rarely suggest any treatment options that are “outside the box."
2) If you are interested in integrative treatments for depression, it’s almost impossible to know where to start, because there are so many different modalities to choose from.
When I was depressed and anxious, what really would have helped me was some direction on what I could do to feel better.
And now that’s what I going to do for you. Give you an integrative mental health ROAD MAP!
So, here are my 4 Essential Pillars for Healing mental health. They help with just about any symptoms you’re experiencing including: anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, OCD or any other:
If you haven’t seen a therapist, it’s definitely the place to start!
Good therapy creates the space for you to feel safe enough to express the thoughts and feelings stuck inside you.
When we feel and understand our story with a therapist’s help, over and over again, something magical can happen…our symptoms starts to shift…and we start to feel better!
I tell people that looking for a therapist is like dating.
You have to meet a lot of people before you find the one that you “click” with. Remember, it took me 5-6 mismatches before I found my guide.
Unfortunately, unless you have the right “connection,” the magic of therapy just won’t happen.
So take your time in choosing a therapist.
Get a few referrals from people you trust. Don't be afraid to ask questions and trust your “gut” about how you feel sitting in session with them. Remember that without safety and connection, there is no therapy.
If you are interested in an integrative approach to your depression, find a therapist open to holistic treatment.
This can sometimes be hard because many therapists are still very much connected to a medical model.
But, if you are persistent you can find an integrative psychotherapist, who really gets it.
Research has shown that regular aerobic exercise can be as potent an antidepressant as Prozac.
Find some movement that allows you to get your heart rate up for a half hour daily. If it’s something you like to do, you’ll be more inclined to do it every day.
3) Hatha Yoga
There are many kinds of yoga out there but I am biased towards the gentle and heart-centered practice of Hatha Yoga, because it’s what I practice and teach.
It offers moment-to-moment opportunities to understand how YOU work internally and offers so many tools designed to help unwind stuck emotional patterns. I think that any mental health treatment plan would be severely limited without it.
Other stress management modalities such as meditation, Tai Chi, Qi Gong can provide similar benefits.
4) Mental Health Nutrition
Using an anti-inflammatory and low allergenic diet, which focuses on adequate high-quality protein, good fats, and lots of organic vegetables is essential in ensuring mental health recovery.
While I have found these 4 pillars to be the key to healing for many people, there are still folks who need something more targeted and specific to help heal…
For these people we always knew that we were missing something but we didn’t know how to figure out what.
What’s Missing in Mental Heath Treatment?
Functional Nutrition (also referred to as Functional Medicine) is the missing link!
Functional nutrition builds on and includes the lifestyle tools described above.
It starts with a comprehensive intake that allows us to create an individualized supplement protocol to naturally support your mental health healing.
These supplements: amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamin and mineral cofactors support mood calming and stabilization.
These tools are amazing (especially the amino acids) and I have seen them literally change lives in just a weeks.
While often this first step is enough, especially when combined with the lifestyle factors described above, there are times we need to dig deeper.
We do this with the help of targeted functional lab testing to identify the specific physical factors that are the main causes of your symptoms.
This is big news.
So no more guessing (which is standard practice for conventional mental health).
This allows us to create an even more tailored individualized treatment plan just for you!
I created Alternative Mental Health Solution to provide this missing link in mental health treatment.
Though there are many helpful tools offered by the mental health field, Functional Nutrition has to be the most significant development that I have seen in my 25 years in the field.
I believe that it has the power to help millions of people diagnosed with depression who have tried conventional mental health treatment and are still struggling with symptoms.
I know that sounds like a grandiose statement, but it’s true.
So while I love therapy and I think that everyone should be in therapy at some point in their lives, I will NOT be doing therapy at Alternative Mental Health Solution.
All of my energy will be spent practicing Functional Nutrition.
Now the ball is in your court!
Are you ready to get unstuck?
Before you answer this I need you to know that working with me will be a partnership.
I’ll take responsibility as the guide, but there will be some work on your end as well.
I do want you to know that I will likely ask you to do a few things that I know dramatically help with your mental health healing:
1) Change your diet.
2) Take targeted supplements based on a comprehensive evaluation.
3) Do some movement at least 3 times a week.
4) Use stress management tools daily to calm your nervous system.
I will also probably ask you to do some special lab testing so we can find the specific root causes of your symptoms.
Once we get this info, we further hone your program so it is tailored just for you.
